Marketing attribution for B2B SaaS: models and reports
One that matches the question being asked, used the same way every month. For most B2B SaaS companies that means a multi-touch model, such as W-shaped or U-shaped, for marketing reports, because deals involve several touches over weeks or months. HubSpot offers nine models. The data underneath matters more than the choice: a model cannot credit a touch the CRM never recorded.
A multi-touch model for reporting, used the same way every month. Consistency matters more than the model.
HubSpot limits deal and revenue attribution reports to Marketing Hub Enterprise.
Comparing channels across tools that use different models. Each tool credits itself.
Check that every deal is linked to a contact with a known source before choosing any model.
Which attribution model should a B2B SaaS company use?
The one that fits the report. Each model answers a different question, so the choice starts with what the report is for.
| Model | How HubSpot splits the credit | Question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| First interaction | 100% to the first touch | Which channels find new buyers? |
| Last interaction | 100% to the last touch | Which channels close the conversion? |
| Linear | Equal credit to every touch | Which channels show up along the way? |
| U-shaped | 40% first, 40% lead conversion, 20% to the rest | Which channels find buyers and turn them into leads? |
| W-shaped | 30% first, 30% contact creation, 30% last deal-creating touch, 10% to the rest | Which channels create leads and deals? |
| Time decay | More credit to recent touches, with a 7-day half-life | Which channels act near the decision? |
| J-shaped | 20% first, 60% conversion, 20% to the rest | Which channels convert? |
| Inverse J-shaped | 60% first, 20% conversion, 20% to the rest | Which channels start the journey? |
| Full path | 22.5% each to first touch, lead creation, deal creation and last touch, 10% to the rest | Which channels matter across the whole sale? |
HubSpot limits W-shaped to deal create and revenue reports, and full path to revenue reports. The models side by side, with a verdict by company stage, are in HubSpot attribution models compared.
Why is attribution harder in B2B SaaS?
Because the sale is long and involves more than one person. A buyer may click an ad, read three articles, attend a webinar and bring in two colleagues before a deal is created. Single-touch models give all the credit to one of those steps.
The waste audit cites a median B2B SaaS sales cycle of 84 days. Over that span, touches happen on several devices, in several tools, and some never reach the CRM at all. 89% of the audited accounts used what the report calls a "default 7-day click" window, and the report says it "captures only 5% to 15% of revenue against an 84-day median sales cycle." Google Ads Help gives 30 days as the platform's default click-through window, with options up to 90.
Which HubSpot plan includes which attribution report?
Each report type has its own plan requirement. HubSpot's attribution reporting needs Marketing Hub or Content Hub at Professional or Enterprise.
| Report type | What it credits | Plan needed |
|---|---|---|
| Contact create | The touches that led to a new contact | Marketing Hub Professional or Enterprise |
| Deal create | The touches that led to a new deal | Marketing Hub Enterprise |
| Revenue | The touches behind closed revenue | Marketing Hub Enterprise |
That split matters for planning. A company on Professional can see which channels create contacts, but not which create deals or revenue, inside HubSpot's attribution reports.
How do ad platforms attribute conversions?
Each platform credits its own ads, using its own rules. That is why channel totals from several platforms usually add up to more than the deals that actually closed.
- Google Ads uses data-driven attribution by default, with last click as the alternative. Google Ads Help says its other rule-based models are no longer supported.
- LinkedIn's Revenue Attribution Report connects HubSpot, Salesforce or Microsoft Dynamics and uses what LinkedIn describes as an any-touch model.
- HubSpot can report across channels, but only on the touches it has recorded.
The fix is to choose one system as the place where cross-channel attribution happens, usually the CRM, and to use platform reports only for decisions inside that platform.
What has to be in place before attribution works?
The touches have to be recorded and linked. A model applied to incomplete data still produces confident percentages. They are just wrong.
Three checks come first.
- Every lead carries its source and click ID. In the 2026 audit, 91% of accounts had no click ID reaching the CRM.
- Every deal is linked to a contact. HubSpot's ad return reports need deals that are closed-won, associated with a contact and given a close date.
- Stage changes are dated. A deal that entered the opportunity stage in March should be counted in March, not when someone later edited it.
When those are fixed, the change can be large. In the audit, the share of closed-won deals attributed to a campaign rose from 0% before the 90-day fix to 67% after it. The setup is covered on the ad spend to revenue page.
Should attribution use leads, pipeline or revenue?
Pipeline and revenue, with leads as an early signal only. Lead counts reward the channels that produce the most form fills, which are not always the ones that produce buyers.
The Paid Ads Pipeline Disconnect study measured how well five common metrics tracked pipeline across 1,412 ad variants. Cost per sales-qualified lead correlated at 0.71. Cost per lead correlated at 0.23, and click-through rate at 0.09. A report that ranks campaigns by cost per lead is ranking them on a weak signal. Frequently asked questions
What is multi-touch attribution?
Multi-touch attribution splits the credit for a conversion across several touches instead of giving it all to one. HubSpot's linear, U-shaped, W-shaped, time decay, J-shaped, inverse J-shaped and full path models are all multi-touch. They suit B2B SaaS sales, where a buyer usually interacts several times before a deal.
What is the default attribution model in Google Ads?
Data-driven attribution is the default in Google Ads, according to Google Ads Help, with last click as the alternative. Google says its other rule-based models are no longer supported. Google's default click-through conversion window is 30 days, and it can be extended to 90.
Is first-touch or last-touch attribution better for B2B SaaS?
Neither works well alone. First touch credits only the channel that found the buyer, and last touch credits only the step before conversion. Both ignore the middle of a long sale. They are useful as two views side by side, but a multi-touch model is the better default for reporting.
Can HubSpot attribute revenue to marketing?
Yes, on Marketing Hub Enterprise. HubSpot's revenue attribution reports, and its deal create reports, are limited to that plan. Marketing Hub Professional includes contact create attribution only. The revenue reports also depend on deals being linked to contacts with recorded touches.
Why do ad platforms report more conversions than the CRM?
Each platform credits its own ads using its own model and window, so one deal can be counted by Google, LinkedIn and Meta at once. LinkedIn's Revenue Attribution Report, for example, uses an any-touch model. The CRM is the place to compare channels, because it counts each deal once.
